Roblox error codes 277, 403, 524, 280, 273, 257, 288 explained

What each error code actually means, and the fix that works — including 277 when your internet is fine.

The seven error codes that actually matter

Roblox returns dozens of numeric error codes, but seven of them account for almost every disconnect, launch failure, and "this experience is unavailable" message you will see in 2026. The codes are stable: each one means a specific thing on Roblox's side, and the fix that works is the same across PC, mobile, Xbox, and PlayStation.

This guide covers 277, 403, 524, 280, 273, 257, and 288 — what each means, the one fix that resolves it in most cases, and what to try when the obvious fix does not work.

Error 277 — "Lost connection to the game server"

The most common code. The game session was running, then the client lost its persistent connection to the Roblox game server (not the website, not the login system — the live game).

The standard advice is "check your internet." It is wrong about half the time. Here is what 277 actually means and the fix that works when your internet is fine:

  • The Roblox client lost its socket to the place server. This can happen because of (1) genuine network drop, (2) ISP DNS hiccup, (3) the place's server hitting the 1-hour rolling restart window, (4) Roblox throttling your client for posting too many remote requests, or (5) a corrupted local DNS cache.
  • The fastest fix when your internet is fine: flush your DNS cache and switch to a public resolver.
    • Windows: Win + R → cmd → ipconfig /flushdns → enter. Then in your network adapter, set DNS to 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (Google).
    • macOS: Terminal → sudo dscacheutil -flushcache; sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder.
    • Mobile: toggle airplane mode for 10 seconds, or switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data once.
  • If 277 hits within seconds of joining any game, your Roblox install is probably corrupt. Uninstall and reinstall the Roblox client (do not try "Repair" — it rarely fixes 277).
  • If 277 hits only on one specific game, that game's server is unstable. Wait 10 minutes and rejoin — most game-server restarts complete in under that window.

Error 403 — "Authentication failed" or "Forbidden"

You tried to launch a place and the Roblox web layer refused to authenticate the launch ticket. Almost always one of three things:

  • Your account is logged in on too many devices. Roblox enforces a session-count limit; the oldest session gets booted. Sign out everywhere via the Roblox website (Settings → Security → Sign out from all other sessions), then sign back in.
  • The Roblox launch handler is not registered correctly. The browser cannot hand off to the Roblox client. Reinstall the Roblox client; on Windows, this re-registers the roblox-player: protocol.
  • You are behind a corporate or school firewall that blocks the launch handoff. There is no client-side fix — switch networks.

Error 524 — "Not authorized to join this game"

The game has restrictions and you do not meet them.

  • Private server / VIP server. The owner has not given you a join link.
  • Group-only game. The place is restricted to members of a specific Roblox group; join the group, then re-join the game.
  • Age-gated game. You are under the required age, or your account does not have a verified age on file. Verify your age in Account Settings.
  • Friends-only game. The owner has set "Only Friends Can Join", and you are not on the friends list.

There is no workaround for any of these. The fix is to satisfy the restriction, not bypass it.

Error 280 — "Place launch failed" or "Roblox.exe corrupted"

The Roblox client started, but the place file did not load. Three causes in 2026:

  • Antivirus quarantined the Roblox executable. Whitelist the Roblox folder in your AV (%LocalAppData%/Roblox/Versions on Windows). Avast, Bitdefender, and Microsoft Defender all do this occasionally after a Roblox auto-update.
  • A corrupt place file in the local cache. Roblox caches the assets of recently-joined places under %LocalAppData%/Roblox/Cache. Delete that folder while Roblox is closed.
  • Outdated client. Roblox sometimes ships a server-side patch that older clients do not handle. Reinstall.

Error 273 — "This account has been logged in from another location"

Someone else logged into your account from another device, and Roblox kicked you out of the live game.

  • If it was you (you launched Roblox on a second device), the older session always loses. Decide which device you actually want and re-launch there.
  • If it was not you, your account is compromised. Immediately: change your password from the website, then sign out of all sessions (Settings → Security). Add 2-step verification if you have not already. After that, audit recent trades and item changes.

A persistent 273 that happens every few minutes when you are the only one using the account usually means a saved session token leaked — change the password and the token rotates.

Error 257 — "Wrong password" / HTTP 401 on launch

The launch ticket the Roblox client used to authenticate is expired or invalid.

  • Sign out and sign back in. This regenerates the launch ticket.
  • Clear browser cookies for roblox.com if you are launching from the website.
  • If 257 hits the moment Roblox opens, your saved credentials are stale. On Windows, remove the cached credential under Control Panel → Credential Manager → Web Credentials → roblox.com.

Error 288 — "Cannot connect to the game" or "Outdated client"

The Roblox client version is older than what the server requires. Roblox usually auto-updates on launch, but the update can fail silently.

  • Quit Roblox completely (check Task Manager — sometimes a RobloxPlayer.exe lingers in the background).
  • Relaunch. Roblox should re-check for updates on cold start.
  • If the auto-update still fails, manually reinstall: uninstall via Settings → Apps, then reinstall from roblox.com/download. Do not use third-party Roblox installers.

Frequently asked

Q. I get error code 277 every few minutes, even with great internet. DNS first, then check your router's QoS/firewall settings — some routers throttle UDP traffic by default, which kills Roblox sessions. Bypass the router with a wired connection or your phone's hotspot for 10 minutes to confirm.

Q. Error 403 right after I changed my password. Expected. Sign out of all sessions (Settings → Security), then sign in fresh. Your launch tickets needed to rotate.

Q. Error 524 on a game I used to be able to play. The game owner changed access settings. Likely the game is now private, group-only, or age-gated. Nothing you can do client-side.

Q. Multiple errors on the same launch — 277 then 403 then 277 again. Almost always your local DNS or your router's stateful connection table. Switch to public DNS (1.1.1.1 / 1.0.0.1) and restart the router.

Q. Why does Roblox keep using the same error code for different problems? The same numeric code maps to a family of underlying causes. Roblox does not surface the specific cause to the user — it only tells the client to bail. The fixes above cover the most common cause for each family.

If none of these fix your error, the issue is probably account-side (banned, restricted, age-flagged) rather than network — and the only place to resolve account-side issues is roblox.com/support.
