Roblox display name vs username explained

What each one does, who sees which, how often you can change them, and why one costs Robux while the other does not.

The short version

Every Roblox account has two names that look similar but do completely different things:

  • Username — the permanent, unique handle that identifies your account. Looks like Builderman or bloxxer_99. Every Roblox account has exactly one, and no two accounts can have the same one.
  • Display name — the optional, changeable label that shows up in chat, on your character, and on leaderboards. Looks like Big Player or Joe. Multiple people can share the same display name.

If you only remember one thing: username is your address, display name is your nickname.

Where each name appears

Different surfaces in Roblox show different names. This is the source of most confusion.

SurfaceWhat shows
Username appears with @ in front, like @Builderman. Above it, your display name appears in larger text.Profile page
Username after a backslash, like Joe (@Builderman)Chat
Display name (in large letters), with username smaller belowFriends list
Display name onlyAbove your character in-game
Display name onlyLeaderboards / scoreboards
Username onlyURLs (roblox.com/users/Builderman)
Username onlyFriend requests by handle
Username onlyWhisper / DM target

The rule of thumb: if it is a place where you might be searched for or pinged, it uses your username. If it is a place where humans are reading the screen socially, it uses your display name.

What is unique vs. what can repeat

Usernames are globally unique across all of Roblox. Once Builderman is taken, no other account can be named Builderman — even if the original account is deleted, the name is held in reserve and never released.

Display names are not unique. Three accounts can all show the same display name at once. This is by design: it lets you go by your real first name, or by a common gamer alias, without worrying that you got there second.

The combination of "unique username + non-unique display name" is what makes the system work. The username is the technical identifier the platform uses to route friend requests, messages, and links. The display name is the cosmetic identifier humans actually read.

Cooldowns and costs

This is where the two diverge sharply:

  • Change your display name — once every 7 days. Free. No charges, no Robux cost, no Premium requirement.
  • Change your username — anytime. 1,000 Robux per change.

The username change is intentionally expensive. Roblox charges Robux specifically to discourage people from cycling through names to dodge moderation actions or impersonate friends. The display name change is intentionally free because it is supposed to be the casual, low-stakes part of the identity.

If you do change your username, your old username goes into the 30-day reserved pool — nobody else can claim it for a month, and after that it is permanently held against your account. The point: there is no risk of someone snapping up your old name to impersonate you.

What the rules say each can contain

Different filters apply to each field:

Usernames must be 3–20 characters, ASCII letters and digits only, with up to one underscore in the middle. No spaces, no symbols other than _, no emoji, no Unicode tricks. The system also blocks names that match recently-banned accounts or impersonate Roblox staff. See Roblox username rules in 2026 for the full rules.

Display names are looser: 3–20 characters, letters and digits, plus a handful of accepted symbols. Spaces are not allowed as a regular character but can be faked with a Unicode workaround — see how to put spaces in your Roblox display name. Capital letters work in display names but are normalized to lowercase in the underlying lookup, so BigPlayer and bigplayer resolve to the same display name from the moderation system's perspective.

When the two names diverge

In 2026 it is normal for someone's username and display name to look completely different. Common patterns:

  • Same name in both — Builderman / Builderman. The display name was never changed.
  • Same word, different capitalization — bloxxer_99 / Bloxxer. The user upgraded their casing.
  • Completely unrelated — xX_player123_Xx / Joe. The user kept the embarrassing 2014 username but rebranded their visible name.
  • Username and display name are different languages — dragonfist / 龍拳. International users frequently use a localized display name while keeping a Latin-character username for compatibility.

If you are friending someone and see two different names, you are not seeing a bug — you are seeing the system working as intended.

Searching for an account

This is the practical question that bites players most often. You added someone whose display name is Joe, and tomorrow when you search "Joe" you find 100 other people with the same display name.

  • Friends list lookup — search by username (the unique one), not by display name. The friends list shows display names but the lookup field accepts usernames first.
  • Friend request from in-game — Roblox automatically captures the user's ID, so even if their display name later changes, the friendship survives.
  • Sharing your profile — share the URL roblox.com/users/<your-username>. That URL is permanent (re-points to the new username if you change it) and resolves the right account no matter what your display name shows.
  • Tagging in chat — most Roblox chat systems accept @<username>, not @<display_name>.

The takeaway: always exchange usernames when adding friends outside the game. Display names can collide.

Quick FAQ

Q. If I change my display name, do my friends keep me as a friend? Yes. Friendship is keyed on the underlying account ID, not the name. Your friends will simply see the new display name from then on.

Q. If I change my username, what happens to my old URLs? Roblox redirects old profile URLs to your new username for at least 30 days. After that the old URL may 404 — share the new one.

Q. Why does the Roblox app sometimes show my username instead of my display name? A handful of older Roblox apps and bots cache one name and not the other, so they keep showing the username for a few hours after a display-name change. It is a stale-cache issue, not a setting.

Q. Can I have a display name that is somebody else's username? Generally no. The filter rejects display names that match an existing username if Roblox suspects impersonation. Pick a clearly distinct name.

Q. Should I even bother with a display name? If you have a self-explanatory username already, no — leave the display name blank or matching. If your username is xX_player_iLoVe_pizza_2014_Xx, the display name is your chance to look like an adult.
